Your situation

Do you already have a Georgia license or ID with a gold or black star in the upper right corner?

Georgia licenses and IDs issued after 2012 carry the star. An out-of-state or foreign license doesn't count. Only one card (license or ID) can carry the star.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your current legal name different from the name on your identity document?

For example, your birth certificate shows your name before marriage.

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • U.S. birth certificate or amended birth certificate
      • Unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, FS-545 or DS-1350)
      • State of Georgia Certificate of Foreign Birth
      • Certificate of Naturalization (N-550 or N-570)
      • Certificate of Citizenship (N-560 or N-561)
    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Social Security card (original, laminated or copy)
      • W-2
      • SSA-1099
      • Pay stub
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement or lease
      • Voter registration card
      • School records (transcript, report card, DS-1)
      • Document issued by a federal, state or local government
      • Utility bill (water, gas, electricity, phone, cable)
      • Vehicle registration or title, or insurance card with your address
      • Medical or health card or bill
      • Paycheck stub, W-2 or 1099
      • Bank or credit card statement
      • Letter on letterhead from your assisted care facility or homeless shelter (with your name, date of birth, the facility's address and a representative's name and phone number; dated within the past six months; accepted on its own)
  2. Submit the online License/ID/Permit Form

DDS requires this form before your visit, with your full Social Security number. It stays on file for 60 days; after that, submit it again.

  3. Choose a Customer Service Center

You can visit any in-state center. Services and hours vary, so check the location page first. To book, DDS's online services account lets you schedule appointments.

  4. At the center

Show your original or certified documents, have your photo taken and pay the fee. If you're missing a document and hold an unexpired Georgia license or ID, DDS gives you a temporary card for up to 120 days to gather it.

  5. Wait for your card

DDS mails permanent licenses within 30 days. TSA does not accept the temporary (interim) license for flights.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • DDS's checklist asks for residency documents dated within the past six months; P.O. Box addresses don't count.
  • Both residency documents can't come from the same source or account.
  • DDS does not accept translated documents.
  • If the name on your identity document differs from your legal name, you need name change documents, even if your current license shows the right name.

Offices that issue REAL ID

DDS says you must visit a Customer Service Center in person for your first REAL ID; kiosks don't handle a first issuance. Agency source.
