Get a REAL ID in Idaho

Get an Idaho Star Card (REAL ID): bring original identity, Social Security and two Idaho residency documents to a county driver's license office; it costs the same as a card without the Star.

Online? No, one office visitITD says to bring your documents to a driver's license office.
Office visitOne visitITD's Star Card pages don't require appointments. ITD says some offices take appointments and some do not; some are walk-in only, some by appointment only. Check the office's listing.
CostSame as a card without the StarAdding the Star when you renew costs the regular fee. License: $35 for 4 years (21 and over), $60 for 8 years (21-62), $20 for 1 year (17-20), $30 for 3 years (15-21). ID: $15 for 4 years, $25 for 8 years (21 and over), $10 under 21. Adding it before renewal means a duplicate card: a duplicate license costs $20. For a duplicate ID card ITD's pages conflict: the Star Card FAQ says duplicates cost $20, the ID card fee table says 'same as original'.
You leave withTemporary paper card; card by mailITD doesn't say how long mailing takes. Bring your old license or ID: it can back up the paper card if you fly before the new card arrives.

Your situation

Does your Idaho license or ID already have the Star in the upper right corner?

The Star is the only visual difference between a Star Card and a regular Idaho card. An out-of-state license doesn't count, even one marked REAL ID.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your current legal name different from the name on your identity document?

For example, your birth certificate shows your name before marriage.

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • U.S. passport or passport card (valid and unexpired)
      • U.S. certified birth certificate from Vital Statistics (plus a government-issued photo ID; plastic or credit-card style certificates, birth records, registrations of birth and hospital certificates are not accepted)
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350 or FS-545) (plus a government-issued photo ID)
      • Certificate of Naturalization (N-550, N-570 or N-578)
      • Certificate of Citizenship (N-560, N-561 or N-645)
    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Your Social Security number
      • Social Security card
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Lease, rental agreement, mortgage or deed (signed and dated)
      • Public utility account statement (cell phone bills not accepted)
      • Bank or financial institution account statement
      • W-2 or 1099 tax form
      • Medical or insurance provider statement, invoice or explanation of benefits
      • Pay stub or employment verification
      • Idaho school enrollment records for the current school year (college IDs not accepted)
      • Motel, hotel, campground or RV park receipt on letterhead (showing 30 days or more of residency)
      • Military Leave and Earning Statement (LES) (for applicants deployed outside Idaho on active duty)
      • Relief agency or shelter certification
      • Residency affidavit (signed by an adult over 18)
      • Court documents with your current address
      • Record of property taxes assessed or paid (receipt dated within one year)
      • Vehicle, homeowner's or renter's insurance card, binder or bill from an Idaho-based carrier (valid, with your current residential address; can be a printout or photocopy of an e-document)
      • Certificate of Idaho Residency (ITD form 3522)
  2. Make your document list

Answer a few questions in ITD's Add the Star tool to get a personal list of documents to bring.

  3. Choose a driver's license office

Go to an office that issues driver's licenses (Driver Services in ITD's directory; some Combined Services locations also list license or Star Card services). ITD says county Sheriff's offices handle driver's licenses and Assessor's offices handle vehicle services. Some offices take appointments and some do not: some are walk-in only, some by appointment only.

  4. At the office

Bring your originals and your current license or ID. Staff scan your documents and return the originals, take your photo, and you pay the fee. You don't need a knowledge or road test just to add the Star. You can add it when you renew, or get a duplicate card with the Star before then.

  5. Wait for your card

You leave with a temporary paper license or ID; the card comes by mail. Keep your old card as a backup if you need to fly before it arrives.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies, faxes and laminated documents are not accepted.
  • Residency documents must be dated within one year, show your physical address (no P.O. Boxes) and come from two different sources; cell phone bills don't count.
  • Your name must verify with Social Security: if you changed it, update it with SSA first and allow 48 hours.
  • An out-of-state license, even one marked REAL ID, doesn't prove your identity on its own.

Offices that issue REAL ID

ITD says you get a Star Card at the same DMV office where you get a driver's license, and that county Sheriff's offices handle driver's licenses, Assessor's offices handle vehicle services, and some locations provide combined services. Agency source.
