Your situation

Does your Indiana license or ID already have the Real ID star?

A Real ID has a star in the top right corner. A card without one reads "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES" at the top.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Has your Indiana residential address changed since your current card was issued?

Only matters if you are renewing a Real ID.

Is your current legal name different from the name on your identity document (for example, your birth certificate)?

If your identity document already shows your current name (for example, a current passport), you don't need proof of the change. A changed date of birth also needs legal proof.

Your plan

  5. Watch your mail

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Residency proofs older than 60 days (most bills, statements and pay stubs), showing a P.O. box, or only one proof instead of two.
  • A Social Security document that doesn't show your full number.
  • A name change without the document that connects it, or not updating your name with Social Security first.
  • Counting on the paper interim license at the airport: it can't be used to board a plane.
