Your situation

Do you already have a Michigan driver's license or state ID?

A REAL ID-compliant Michigan card shows a star in a gold circle or in a silhouette of Michigan in the upper right corner. Enhanced licenses and IDs are REAL ID-compliant even without the star. An out-of-state license doesn't count.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your current legal name different from the name on your birth certificate or legal presence document?

For example, your birth certificate shows your name before marriage.

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Current Michigan driver's license or state ID
    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Valid U.S. passport or passport card
      • Certified U.S. birth certificate (issued by the vital records office of the state of birth (or another U.S. government unit), with full name, date and place of birth, a parent's name, filing date, registrar's certification and signature, and a raised seal or stamp)
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350 or FS-545)
      • Certificate of Citizenship (N-560 or N-561)
      • Certificate of Naturalization (N-550, N-570 or N-578)
  2. Check your documents

Use the Department's form Applying for a Michigan license or state ID (SOS-428). Documents marked with the star can be used for REAL ID.

  3. Schedule an office visit

The Department strongly recommends scheduling, up to six months ahead, online or at 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424). Without a scheduled visit, staff find you the next available slot.

  5. Consider an enhanced license or ID (optional)

Enhanced cards are REAL ID-compliant and can also be used instead of a passport to re-enter the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean. You apply in person with a U.S. citizenship document, proof of Social Security number, two proofs of Michigan residency and any name change document. The Department says fees vary when you switch an existing card.

  6. Watch your mail

Cards are printed off-site and mailed. To track yours, log into Online Services, select More, then View Credential Mail Status.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies or faxes: documents must be originals or copies certified with a raised seal or stamp.
  • A hospital birth certificate, an adoption record or a delayed foreign birth certificate; Puerto Rico birth certificates must be issued on or after July 1, 2010.
  • A name that doesn't match your Social Security record: correct it with the Social Security Administration before your visit.
  • For a first card: residency documents older than 90 days, or a P.O. box instead of a residential address.
