Your situation

Do you already have a Missouri license or ID card with a star in the upper right corner?

The star marks a REAL ID-compliant card. A card marked "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES" or an out-of-state card doesn't count. Not a U.S. citizen? Choose "No": the DOR says applicants with USCIS immigration documents must apply in person and submit documents for verification.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your current legal name different from the name on your identity or lawful status document?

For example, your birth certificate shows your name before marriage.

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
      • Certified U.S. birth certificate
      • U.S. Birth Abroad record
      • Certificate of Naturalization
      • Certificate of Citizenship
    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Social Security card (signed, if you're 18 or older)
      • W-2 form
      • SSA-1099 or non-SSA-1099 form
      • Pay stub with your name and Social Security number
      • Letter from the Social Security Administration saying you have no number (only with a foreign passport, U.S. visa and I-94)
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Utility bill (phone, water, gas, electric, trash, sewer, internet, cable)
      • Federal, state or local government letter or document (e.g. property tax notice or receipt, W-2, 1099, VA letter, student loan statement)
      • Bank, credit card, credit union or investment statement, or a pay, benefit or refund check
      • Insurance notice, statement or card, medical or hospital bill
      • Letter from a school or a professional licensing board
      • Mortgage, lease, rental agreement, deed or homeowner association letter
      • Homeless shelter letter (issued within the previous 90 days)
      • Missouri Safe at Home program card
      • Renewal postcard, or unexpired Missouri license, nondriver ID or permit
      • Missouri voter registration card (within two years)
      • Postmarked envelope from an established business or organization
      • Under 21: a parent's or guardian's document and statement that you live with them (counts for one of the two)
  2. Build your document list

The DOR's interactive REAL ID guide asks a few questions and lists the documents you need, including any secondary immigration documents.

  3. Renew or apply for a duplicate

Within six months of your card's expiration you apply as a renewal. Earlier than that, you can apply for a duplicate to get a REAL ID; the duplicate fee is waived once if you've never had a REAL ID, but the license office processing fee still applies.

  4. Visit a license office

Bring your original documents to any of Missouri's more than 170 license offices. The DOR accepts cash, personal check, cashier's check, money order, and Discover, American Express, Visa or Mastercard.

  5. Wait for your card

Cards are produced centrally and mailed within 10 to 15 business days. Until then you carry a temporary paper document, valid 45 days and marked "NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES". A temporary driving document can be extended at a license office if your card hasn't arrived; a nondriver ID temporary can be used until the card comes.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Two residency documents from the same source, or two from the housing, voter card, postmarked envelope and similar items.
  • Residency documents on a phone screen: the DOR needs hard copies to verify and scan.
  • A laminated Social Security card, or an unsigned one if you're 18 or older.
  • Expecting both a license and an ID card to be REAL ID: you can hold only one REAL ID-compliant card.
