Your situation

Do you have a valid Nebraska driver's license or State ID card with a star in the upper right corner?

Nebraska licenses and State ID cards with the star are REAL ID compliant; cards marked "not for federal identification" (issued to USCIS parolees since 2023) are not. The white star is bordered by a gold circle on cards issued before March 2026 and by a black circle on cards issued since. An out-of-state card doesn't count. If you're renewing an expired Nebraska card, see the DMV's renewal page: proof of citizenship is needed only once, and address proofs only if you moved or your address was never verified.

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate (issued by a county or state vital statistics office, not a hospital)
      • Valid U.S. passport or passport card
      • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
      • Birth certificate from a U.S. territory (Puerto Rico birth certificates must be issued on or after July 1, 2010)
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Bank or financial institution account statement (last 90 days)
      • Pay stub or earnings statement with the employer's name and address (last 90 days)
      • Federal, state or local government document, such as a receipt (last 90 days)
      • Mail with a postmark or stamped date (envelope, box or postcard, last 90 days)
      • Correspondence, receipt or invoice (dated within the last 90 days)
      • Magazine (issued within the last 90 days)
      • Valid Nebraska vehicle registration
      • Valid life, health, auto or home insurance policy or card
      • Valid real estate tax statement or receipt
      • Any valid license, such as driver's, nursing, law, teaching or fishing
      • Nebraska voter registration card
      • Mortgage, lease or rental agreement (a lease or rental agreement must include the landlord's name and contact information)
      • Nebraska DMV renewal notice
      • Blank check or deposit slip (not a temporary check)
  2. Check the document checklist

The DMV's REAL ID checklist lists the identity, lawful status, address and name change documents it accepts. It notes that more documents may be required.

  3. Fill in the data form

Download and complete the Class O data form, or fill one in at the office. Write your complete Social Security number on it, unless you're not eligible for one; the DMV verifies it with the Social Security Administration.

  4. Book an appointment

At Bellevue, Grand Island, Lincoln, Norfolk and Omaha, appointments are highly recommended for license and State ID services, with limited walk-in help, and required for car and motorcycle drive tests. The DMV doesn't say whether other offices take appointments.

  5. Visit a driver licensing office

You can go to any Nebraska DMV driver licensing office. Show your documents, meet the vision and medical requirements and have your photo taken. Outside Douglas and Sarpy counties you pay the fee to the County Treasurer, who gives you the 30-day receipt. Some County Treasurers and the Douglas and Sarpy offices don't take checks; others can't take cards, so have cash on hand if in doubt.

  6. Watch your mail

You leave with a 30-day receipt. The DMV doesn't state a mailing time for a first card; its renewal page says cards are mailed within 20 business days. If yours hasn't arrived after 20 days, call Driver Licensing Services at 402-471-3861.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies, or a birth certificate issued by a hospital instead of a county or state vital statistics office.
  • Two address proofs from the same source, a P.O. box, or bills and statements older than 90 days.
  • Showing only an I-94 or an I-766: the DMV also wants a second lawful status document or an I-797.
  • A marriage license that doesn't show your full name before and after, when you change more than your last name.
  • A card issued under parolee status: the DMV marks these "not for federal identification".
