  2. Check your documents with the REAL ID Companion

MVD's REAL ID Companion asks a few questions and prints the list of documents to bring. The full list is in MVD's acceptable documents PDF.

Choose the "Drivers License/ID - REAL ID or Standard" appointment type and select every service you need. Appointments can be made up to 30 days ahead, and not every type is offered at every office. Optional: fill out MVD's online pre-application first to save time.

  5. Wait for your card

You leave with a temporary license or ID card, and the permanent card is produced centrally and mailed to the address you gave. Your old card is voided or hole-punched and can be used together with the temporary one for up to 45 days. You can check the status online with "Where's My License".

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies, notarized photocopies and faded, torn or taped documents are not accepted; bring originals or certified copies.
  • Residency proofs showing only a PO Box or HC address don't count.
  • Documents not in English need a full, certified English translation.
  • Appointments are cancelled if you arrive more than 10 minutes late.
