Get a REAL ID in Oregon

Get an Oregon REAL ID: gather original documents, then visit a DMV office (an appointment is your best assurance of being served) and pay $30 on top of the regular card fee.

Online? No, one office visitYou can't get an original REAL ID online. You apply in person and bring original documents.
Office visitAppointment recommendedWalk-ins are allowed, but the DMV warns of longer waits with no guarantee you'll be served. New appointment slots open 30 days out.
Cost$30 on top of the card feeCharged every time you get an original, renewal or replacement REAL ID. The DMV's regular fees: driver license $64 original, $54 renewal, $30 replacement; ID card $47 original, $43 renewal, $40 replacement. Limited-term cards have different fees; see the fee page. Switching to REAL ID doesn't change your card's expiration date.
You leave withTemporary paper IDYour card comes in the mail; the DMV says in about 20 days on one page and up to three weeks on another. TSA won't accept the paper ID.

Your situation

Does your Oregon license, permit or ID already have a star inside a black circle in the top right corner?

A card without the star is not a REAL ID. Newer standard cards say "Not for REAL ID Act" there; cards issued before July 2020 have nothing there.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your full legal name missing from your proof of identity (for example, you changed it after marriage)?

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • U.S. passport or U.S. passport card (recently issued ones may not verify; bring a second document from this list too)
      • U.S. birth certificate issued by the state or local government where you were born
      • Certificate of Citizenship
      • Certificate of Naturalization
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Utility hook-up order or utility statement (dated within the past six months)
      • Any document from a financial institution with your residence address
      • Any item from a verifiable business or government agency delivered by USPS, FedEx or UPS
      • Rental or lease agreement signed by the landlord (original or electronic signature)
      • Any document from an insurance company or agent
      • Paycheck or pay stub (dated within the past 12 months)
      • W-2 or 1099 for the previous tax year
      • Oregon driver's license, permit or ID card (expired no more than 13 years)
      • Oregon vehicle title for a vehicle you own
      • Oregon voter notification card, voter profile report or Selective Service card (dated within the past five years)
      • School document showing enrollment for the current school year
      • Medical records dated within the past 12 months, or a health benefits card
      • Loan agreement, payment booklet or loan statement
      • Affidavit of Shared Residence (form 735-7480) (the person you live with must come with you and bring their own proof of address)
      • Letter from Oregon State Hospital, a homeless shelter, transitional service provider or halfway house certifying your address (approved by DMV, dated within 60 days of your application)
      • Unexpired professional license issued by a U.S. agency
      • Any document the DMV accepts as proof of lawful status, identity or legal name that shows your residence address
  2. Make your document checklist

The DMV's online documents guide builds a list of what to bring. Some documents, like a certified birth certificate, take time to get, so check early.

  3. Book an appointment or walk in

An appointment on DMV2U is the DMV's best assurance of in-office service. Offices differ in how many appointments they offer, and new slots open 30 days out hour by hour. You can walk in to any office, but expect longer waits with no guarantee you'll be served.

  4. At the office

Bring your original documents, give your Social Security number, and pay the $30 REAL ID fee plus the regular card fee. Offices take cash, checks, money orders, mobile payments, debit cards, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. The DMV scans your documents and gives you a temporary paper ID; the card comes in the mail. Upgrading to REAL ID doesn't change your card's expiration date; a REAL ID replacement is valid as long as the card it replaces.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies and electronic copies of identity documents are not accepted; only proofs of address may be copies or printouts.
  • The two address proofs must come from two different sources and show your physical home address, not a P.O. Box.
  • Recently issued U.S. passports may not verify in the national system; bring a second identity document, such as a birth certificate.
  • Your current legal name must match the name on your Social Security card.
