Get a REAL ID in Utah

Get a Utah REAL ID (a license or ID card with a gold star): most Utah cards already have it; if yours doesn't, bring original documents to a Driver License Division office by appointment and get your card by mail.

Online? No online route listedThe DLD's pages for a first Utah license or ID card and for a replacement all say to schedule an appointment and show your documents at a Driver License office. Online renewal exists for eligible renewals, but the DLD doesn't say it adds the star.

Your situation

Does your current Utah driver license or ID card have the gold star?

The DLD says a REAL ID-compliant Utah card has a gold star in the upper right-hand corner.

Are you a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident?
Is your current name different from the name on your birth certificate or passport?

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
      • Certified copy of a birth certificate (filed with the State Office of Vital Statistics or equivalent agency in your state of birth)
      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350 or FS-545)
      • Valid, unexpired permanent resident card or conditional permanent resident card (I-551)

      • W-2 form

      • Pay stub
      • Social Security Administration letter saying you're ineligible for a number because of your lawful presence status
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Bank statement
      • Court documents
      • Current mortgage or rental contract
      • Major credit card bill
      • Property tax notice

      • Vehicle title
  2. Check your card for the gold star

A REAL ID-compliant Utah driver license or ID card has a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. If yours has it, you don't need to do anything for REAL ID.

  3. Apply online and schedule an appointment

On the DLD site, choose Driver License or ID Card services and the option that fits you (first-time original, renewal or replacement), then submit the application and schedule an appointment at a Driver License office. If you're not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident, choose the Limited-Term driver license or ID card instead of the regular one.

  4. Go to your appointment

Check in with your confirmation number, take a photo, present your documents to the examiner, complete the eye test if you're getting a driver license, and pay the fee. You get a temporary license or ID card the same day. If you're transferring a license from another state, you take a 25-question open-book written test, may need a driving skills test, and surrender the other state's license; the temporary license comes after all required testing.

  5. Watch your mail

Your card is mailed in about 4-6 weeks, though the DLD says processing and mailing can take 6-8 weeks. After four weeks you can check its production status online.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies, faxed copies, laminated birth certificates or hospital certificates: documents must be originals or certified copies.
  • Address proofs older than 90 days, or only one of the two required.
  • An unsigned Social Security card or just the card stub.
  • Keeping another state's REAL ID card: by law you may hold only one REAL ID-compliant card at a time.

Offices that issue REAL ID

Utah's Driver License Division issues licenses and REAL ID cards at its Driver License offices; the Tax Commission's DMV (Motor Vehicle Division) is a separate agency for vehicle titles and registration. Agency source.
