Your situation

Which card do you want?
Do you already have a Vermont license or Non-Driver ID?

A REAL ID-compliant Vermont card has a circle with a star in the upper right corner. A Driver's Privilege Card (DPC) is not REAL ID-compliant.

Is your current name different from the name on your birth certificate or passport?

For example, after marriage, a civil union or a court-ordered name change.

  4. At the office

Bring all your original documents. A Driver's Privilege Card holder upgrades to REAL ID by renewing in person. If you hold a non-REAL ID card, you must provide all required documents again.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies and faxes are not accepted: bring originals or certified copies.
  • Residency documents must show a Vermont street address; P.O. boxes don't count.
  • Proof of lawful status with less than 30 days left before it expires is not accepted.
  • TSA does not accept a temporary license or ID on its own, and a temporary Enhanced license is not accepted for border crossing.
