Do I need a REAL ID to drive, vote, or enter a federal building?
According to DHS, a REAL ID is not needed to drive, vote, or apply for federal benefits, but most federal facilities require a REAL ID or other acceptable ID for adults.

Not to drive or vote. A fact sheet from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service says a standard license stays valid for driving, and that no REAL ID is needed to vote or register to vote, to apply for or receive federal benefits such as Social Security or veterans benefits, to get health or life-preserving services, or to enter a police station or ask for police help.
Most federal facilities are different. DHS says that since May 7, 2025, adults 18 and older need a REAL ID-compliant card or another acceptable ID, such as a passport, to enter most federal facilities. Buildings that don't require ID for general access are an exception, and DHS recommends checking a specific facility's entry rules before you go.
