Your situation

Do you have an Oklahoma driver license or State ID now?

An Oklahoma REAL ID has a star in the top right corner. A card without the star may say it is not acceptable for REAL ID purposes.

Are you a U.S. citizen?
Is your current legal name different from the name on your birth certificate or other identity document?

Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Birth certificate (not a hospital certificate or record, footprint keepsake or birth registration form; an Abstract of Birth only if issued on secure document paper with the Vital Statistics certification statement)

      • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240, DS-1350 or FS-545)

      • Valid, unexpired foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and a valid I-94 (other USCIS documents, such as a DS-2019 or I-20, may be required depending on your status)
    • Accepted documents (bring 1)
      • Your Social Security number (the physical card is not required)
    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Utility, phone, cable or similar bill (dated within the last 60 days)
      • Bank or credit card statement (dated within the last 60 days)
      • Homeowner's or renter's insurance statement (dated within the last 60 days)
      • Mail delivered by USPS, FedEx or UPS (dated within the last 60 days; not junk mail or handwritten letters)

      • Property tax bill or receipt, or a Social Security Administration document (dated within the last year)
      • Letter from a federal or Oklahoma government agency (dated within the last year)
      • Valid, unexpired Oklahoma driver license or ID card (active and valid)

      • Insurance policy or card with your address (homeowner's, renter's, life, health or vehicle)

  2. Use the REAL ID Checklist

Service Oklahoma's online checklist shows the documents to bring and can email the list to you.

  3. Go to a Licensing Office or a Licensed Operator

You can upgrade at a Service Oklahoma Licensing and Exam location (no appointment needed: check the live wait times and check in online on the day of your visit) or at a Licensed Operator, the former tag agencies. For a State ID, Service Oklahoma recommends calling a Licensed Operator ahead to ask about availability or walk-in times. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must come with you.

  4. Pay and get your paper temporary

Staff check your documents and you pay the fee. Accepted payment types vary by location: Service Oklahoma says most Licensing Offices take only credit cards, so check with your location first. You leave with a paper temporary.

  5. Wait for your card

The card typically arrives by mail within 30 days and can't be expedited. You can check its status on Navigate. Service Oklahoma recommends applying at least 4 weeks before you plan to fly, because TSA does not accept the paper temporary.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Photocopies and notarized documents are not accepted.
  • Hospital birth certificates, footprint keepsakes, birth registration forms and uncertified Abstracts of Birth are not accepted.
  • If your name changed, you need legal proof of every change since your identity document.
  • The paper temporary is not accepted by TSA for flying; apply at least 4 weeks before you travel.
  • Licensed Operators can't issue a REAL ID to non-citizens other than permanent residents; go to a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office.

Offices that issue REAL ID

Service Oklahoma says you apply for a first REAL ID in person at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office or a Licensed Operator; Licensed Operators serve only U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and a first Oklahoma license or State ID is done at a Licensing Office. Drive Test Centers serve learner permit holders taking a drive test, so they are not listed as REAL ID locations. Agency source.
