Your plan

  1. Gather your documents

    • Accepted documents (bring 2)
      • Utility bill
      • Mortgage statement
  2. Check your documents before the visit

The DMV's pre-screening tool helps you work out which forms and documents you need for your situation and lets you submit them for review before you go.

  3. Make a reservation

Search for an office by city or ZIP code, open its details and reserve there. Reservations are not available at every office.

  4. At the office

Bring all your original documents. You can print the application form (MV-44) in advance. The DMV takes a new photo and you leave with a temporary document; the card comes by mail in about 2 weeks.

  5. Upgrading before your renewal date

You can renew early to switch if your current license or ID is valid, was issued more than 6 months ago, does not expire within 12 months and is not conditional or restricted. Early-renewal fees depend on the time left until your next birthday. If your card is already a REAL ID, you can't switch to Enhanced early.

Common reasons people get turned away

  • Residency documents issued more than 365 days before your visit don't count.
  • Photocopies are not accepted: bring originals or certified copies.
  • Only your full legal name can appear on the card, no nicknames.
  • A New York card with neither a star nor a flag is not REAL ID-compliant.
